Class set ups, designated tutor, staff ratios

We have structured the school class groups based on Key Stages (KS2, KS3 & KS4).  Each class will most likely be mixed aged and mixed ability.  Class sizes will be no more than 5 and will have a class teacher and at least 1 support member of staff.

The class teacher will deliver the core curriculum (English, Maths, Science, Humanities, Computing, Languages) and other professionals within the school will deliver the creative curriculum (Cooking, Art, PE and Outdoor Education).

If specific interventions are required the students also have access to the school’s pastoral coordinator and learning coordinator.

School communication - daily reports/parent’s evenings

We firmly believe good communication between school and home is crucial in best supporting our students.  On a daily basis parents/carers will be emailed a copy of their child’s daily report, giving a breakdown of their performance in each lesson that day.  Sometimes a subsequent phone call is required to discuss things of particular note, positive or negative.

The school organises termly parent/carer evenings where face to face consultations with teachers can occur.  With that said the school has a relaxed policy when it comes to parent meetings, which can be arrange as and when a parent would like to speak to their child’s teachers.  There is a form to request a meeting in the parent zone on the school’s website.

Careers Guidance and future destinations

All students in Key Stage 3 have access to careers advice and guidance through career advisors and the school’s curriculum which will involve links with local colleges and further education providers.

It is very much our intention to be extending our provision in the next year or so to increase the age range to 16 years.  Until then, any student in Years 8 or 9 will have a clear pathway plan agreed.  We will ensure we fully prepare the student and support the transition from Kingsgate to the next provision whether that is another school or college placement.  Our support of our students will not stop once they leave us as we are committed to their continued success.

Exclusions

The use of fixed term exclusions at Kingsgate School is a last resort and may be used when there is a significant or persistent attacks on staff/or other students by an individual student or a student displays behaviours that have a significant impact on the effective running of the school and on the education of the other students in school.  The fixed term exclusion gives the school, parents/carers, and other professional agencies to communicate and agree the best way forward for the excluded student and the school.
